foundation problems and health
June 9, 2021

Your foundation and your health may seem like two completely unrelated things. Nonetheless, they are more closely related than you might think. There may be problems lurking below your feet that are unknowingly affecting your health.

Your Foundation and Mold

Your foundation is at the lowest point of your home. In addition, it is adjacent to soil, which is rich in moisture. If there are even minor cracks in your foundation, that moisture in the soil may seep into even the smallest openings, allowing mold to grow unseen and unchecked.

Your foundation is also subject to water drainage. This may be a minor issue if you have a properly graded yard with appropriate drainage and rain gutters; however, many homes don’t have proper yard grading or drainage equipment. Rain or sprinkler water often seeps into the space between the foundation and the surrounding soil, further contributing to a mold problem.

Finally, your foundation lies beneath the ground with minimal air circulation. A little bit of water in your attic can easily dry due to circulation and subsequent evaporation, but water in your foundation or your basement can’t evaporate as easily. This means the moisture stays and mold grows.

Mold and Your Health

We’ve all heard the nightmare stories of how mold can negatively affect your health, and while a most mold is benign, there are plenty of molds that are far from harmless. If you have a foundation or basement full of moisture cracks in which mold is growing, you may be putting your health and the health of your family at risk.
